Earlier this year, Xiaomi, one of the world's leading smartphone companies and currently one of China's hottest electric car makers, announced that it had received pre-orders for more than 100000 units within 15 days of pre-sales opening for its upgraded SU7 electric sports sedan. Today, the car has been officially put on sale in China, and 15000 customers have placed orders in just 34 minutes after the price was announced. Xiaomi shared the milestone on its official Weibo: "15000 sold in 34 minutes.# New Generation SU7# Thanks for your support."
the original SU7 surpassed Tesla Model 3 in sales of 258,164 vehicles to become the best-selling car in China in 2025. it is expected that this popular electric sports car will continue this performance in 2026. The starting price of the upgraded model is equivalent to 45400 Australian dollars (about 210000 yuan), slightly higher than the original model that began delivery less than two years ago.
Key upgrades for the upcoming 2026 model include battery and range improvements. The new battery can provide a CLTC range of up to 902 kilometers, and the WLTP range is expected to exceed 750 kilometers. The upgraded battery uses the second generation nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) Kirin battery of Ningde Times (CATL). When the capacity is 101 kW, it can charge the power from 10% to 80% in about 11 minutes, and it only takes 15 minutes to increase the CLTC range of 670 kilometers. Entry-level models will be equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs provided by BYD, which will focus on daily driving needs.
In terms of performance, all models are equipped with an upgraded V6S Plus motor, and the Max version has a power of up to 508 kW. In terms of safety, Xiaomi has improved the chassis structure, now uses high-strength steel with a tensile strength of up to 2,200 MPa, and has increased the number of airbags to nine. Self-driving technology has also been upgraded. All models now come standard with lidar units and a high-end computing chip with a computing power of 700 TOPS (trillions of operations per second).
In terms of appearance, a new color scheme including new blue and red has been introduced, and the wheel style has also been updated. The function of the front-up box has been greatly improved. The vehicle can now open the front-up box through a button, an external voice command or an in-vehicle application. This makes the use of the front spare box more convenient, which is expected to increase the frequency of use. In the interior, black theme options and more comfort-oriented seats are available. Xiaomi has also further improved the sound insulation of the cockpit. Although it is already quite good compared with other cars on the market, this optimization is more significant.
The company began delivering the SU7, a four-door electric sedan, in April 2024, not long before the vehicle was unveiled. In November 2024, the milestone of 100000 vehicles was reached, fulfilling the target set for the year. The final sales volume for the year was 143000, and a target of selling more than 300000 vehicles by 2025 was set. Then in 2025, thanks to the hot sales of SU7 cars and YU7 SUV, the sales volume reached 411,800, and the brand popularity increased significantly.
Previously, the brand has hinted that 2027 will be the year of global expansion, but in some western markets it may be ahead of schedule. After a recent trip to China to experience Xiaomi cars up close, it is clear that the brand's ambitions go far beyond becoming the world's top three mobile phone manufacturers. The new model undoubtedly takes it to a new level, and these upgrades may also be introduced to the global market in the future. Given that the order data for the new SU7 has exceeded expectations, it is clear that the product is exceeding the expectations of hundreds of thousands of customers in China.
