Baotou Weijun 1.2GWh grid side independent energy storage power station
This project is one of Baotou Weijun 1.5GW/9GWh independent energy storage power station projects, the total planned installed capacity of the project is 9GWh.
The power station charges during off-peak hours and discharges during peak periods. It is expected to increase renewable energy consumption by more than 450 million kWh annually, effectively addressing the intermittency challenges of renewable sources and substantially enhancing both renewable energy integration and grid frequency regulation capacity in western China. The power station generates approximately RMB 120 million in annual revenue, reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 260,000 tonnes, and delivers multiple benefits in terms of ecology, economy, and power grid security.
A New Integrated Investment-Construction-Operation Paradigm Takes Shape
To meet the challenging outdoor conditions in Inner Mongolia—low temperatures and frequent sandstorms—Gotion High-Tech has tailored an intelligent liquid-cooled energy storage solution for the project, ensuring a precise match between technology and application scenario. The project deploys 120 sets of Guoxuan High-Tech’s self-developed 10MWh energy storage units, equipped with in-house designed and manufactured high-performance, long-cycle-life lithium iron phosphate battery cells, suitable for grid-forming power plants. The system’s intelligent temperature-control technology can dynamically adjust its operating strategy based on the site conditions, thereby maximizing energy savings. The aforementioned solution integrates multiple active safety measures, including battery-module-level thermal-runaway monitoring, pack-level immersion cooling, and a multi-mode fire-extinguishing system. These features help mitigate operational risks at the source, ensuring the long-term safe operation of the energy storage station. This grid connection marks the successful implementation of Gotion High-Tech Energy Storage’s integrated “investment–construction–operation” model. The project has moved beyond the conventional, single-mode approach of “technology export” to achieve deep involvement across the entire value chain, encompassing investment, construction, equipment supply, and operations. It is worth noting that the entire substation adopts a prefabricated structural system (including prefabricated foundations, firewalls, and cable trenches), which significantly reduces on-site civil works, shortens the construction period, and enhances construction quality. As a result, full-capacity commissioning was completed in just two months, not only enabling early grid connection but also setting a new industry record for the fastest grid-connection time.
According to available information, the power station is expected to generate annual revenues of approximately RMB 120 million. Meanwhile, as an independent market participant, the power plant can participate in various electricity market transactions immediately after commissioning, thereby further expanding its profit margins.
Gotion High-Tech Bolsters Its Zero-Carbon Strategy in Western China
The successful grid connection of the Baotou Weijun Power Station marks another significant milestone in Gotion High-Tech’s deepening presence in Inner Mongolia and its broader rollout of zero-carbon initiatives in western China. Currently, Gotion High-Tech has established a diversified, zero-carbon ecosystem in Inner Mongolia. In October 2025, the company unveiled its “Zero-Carbon Solution for High-Energy-Consuming Factories” in Wuhai, Inner Mongolia, taking the lead in building the world’s first zero-carbon anode-materials manufacturing base. This initiative not only achieves zero-carbon circularity within the industry itself but also offers a new pathway for numerous high-energy-consuming enterprises to transition toward zero-carbon operations. It injects fresh momentum into the green transformation of the Western Development strategy. As Inner Mongolia’s first demonstration project to operate under both “shared energy storage” and “frequency regulation services” models, the grid connection of the Baotou Weijun Power Station not only injects new momentum into regional renewable energy integration and grid regulation, but also carries multi-layered strategic significance. This project is accelerating the high-quality development of Inner Mongolia’s new energy industry, helping the region establish itself as a national demonstration hub for the new energy and energy storage sectors and providing an “Inner Mongolia model” for the energy transition. Moreover, it will offer the “Guoxuan Experience” to support the large-scale, high-quality deployment of next-generation energy storage technologies, thereby speeding up the construction of a new type of power system nationwide and furnishing critical support for China’s energy structure transformation and enhanced energy self-reliance and control.
